  • Age: Applicants must be under the age of 45 when they apply for the visa.

 

  • Language skills: Applicants must prove their English language proficiency by taking an approved English language exam, such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

 

  • Qualifications: Applicants must have skills and qualifications that are in demand in the Australian labor market. The skills and qualifications must be assessed by a relevant assessing authority.

 

  • Work experience: Applicants must have relevant work experience in their nominated occupation.

 

  • 65 Points: Applicants must score at least 65 Points on the Australia Points System

 

  • Health and character: Applicants must meet health and character requirements, which include passing a medical examination and providing police clearance certificates.

 

Types of General Skilled Migration Visas

 

These are the General Skilled Migration visas available

 

  • Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189): This visa is for skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer, a state or territory government or a family member. To apply for this visa applicants must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect and then receive an invitation to apply.

 

  • Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190): This visa is for skilled workers who are nominated by a state or territory government. To apply for this visa applicants must first be nominated by a state or territory government and then submit an EOI through SkillSelect. If the applicant is invited to apply they must then apply for the visa within 60 days.

 

  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491): This visa is for skilled workers who are nominated by a state or territory government or sponsored by an eligible family member who lives in a designated regional area. To apply for this visa applicants must first be nominated or sponsored and then submit an EOI through SkillSelect. If the applicant is invited to apply they must then apply for the visa within 60 days.

 

General Skilled Migration Visa Application Process

 

The visa application process for Skilled Migration is a multi-step process

 

  • Submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI): Applicants must submit an EOI through SkillSelect, which is an online platform that allows skilled workers to be considered for a General Skilled Migration visa. The EOI must provide details about the applicant’s skills and work experience.

 

  • Receiving an invitation to apply: If the applicant is selected from SkillSelect they will receive an invitation to apply for the visa. The invitation will include instructions on how to apply and the documents required for the visa application.

 

  • Applying for the visa: Once the applicant receives an invitation to apply, they must submit a formal visa application within 60 days. The application must include all the required documents such as proof of qualifications, work experience, English language proficiency, health and character checks and any other documents specified in the invitation.

 

  • Visa decision: After the visa application is submitted the Department of Home Affairs will assess the application and make a decision
